Upstands & splash backs

Looking perfect

To keep your granite looking as good as the day it was fitted, it needs to be properly maintained.

Depending on the hardness of your water you may experience a gradual build-up of lime scale around the taps and sink. This may appear as a loss of polish, but it can easily be removed with a green scourer or fine wire wool. From time to time you can enhance the surface by using any brand of household polish and buff with a soft dry cloth.

We treat the granite surface with a proprietary sealer, but anything acidic left on for a prolonged period of time may damage your worktops. Products that may cause staining include:

• Cooking Oil
• Beetroot
• Lemon Juice
• Icing
• Food Dyes
• Alcohol

In the case one of these spills on your worktops, you should clean it up immediately.

Upstands

Upstands are used to create a border around the kitchen wall that makes it easy to wipe down. Upstands can be manufactured in a range of materials and colours to match the design of your kitchen. An upstand is placed at the back of the worktop where the worktop surface and wall meet. It is intended to hide the gap between the end of the worktop and wall, as well as the unevenness in the worktop and wall. These upstands can be easily removed and replaced if you want to update the look of your kitchen without spending large amounts of money.

Upstands look perfect in contemporary and traditional styled kitchens and they create a stunning effect while remaining practical. The most popular material choice for upstands is granite or quartz as they offer low maintenance with visually stunning aesthetics. Granite and quartz also don’t have limitations, such as melting issues, preventing them from being installed behind hobs, unlike their acrylic counterparts.

Splash backs

Splash Backs can enhance the aesthetics of your kitchen as well as the day to day maintenance. They provide a continuous run of the worktop colour and design up your kitchen wall, creating a seamless finish. Splash Backs are available in a range of colours, designs, and styles that add a striking feature to your kitchen. Additionally, they are available in 1200mm heights, ensuring that you can cover your entire kitchen wall for better hygiene and maintenance.

Splash Backs can be used in your kitchen alongside upstands or on their own. While splash backs are most commonly used behind a cooker or a hob, there are limitations when it comes to the materials that can be used depending on the type of cooker you have. Acrylic splash backs cannot be used behind a gas hob due to the temperature tolerance and high risk of heat damage to the plastic. However, glass splash backs are a perfect alternative and can be closely matched to the acrylic used throughout your kitchen.

If you have an electric or induction hob, acrylic is an ideal material to use and ensures your kitchen wall surfaces stay as clean, moisture free, and easy to maintain as possible. Acrylic is a useful material choice for splash backs due to its great durability, ensuring it will last for years. Additionally, it will keep its colour and will not deteriorate with age, which is particularly useful if you have a splash back made from brightly coloured acrylic or feature a design.

Cladding

Cladding is also a popular choice, taking the granite higher up the wall to the underside of cabinets or Cooker Hoods. Kitchen wall cladding provides a hygienic wipe over surface that is easy to clean. This is a great alternative to kitchen tiling as the grout between tiles can easily become susceptible to mould from the heat and condensation in the room. Kitchen wall cladding has no grout, making it hygienic and easy to install.

As well as using cladding on the walls, it is also perfectly suited for use on the ceiling, giving you another area that you will not have to worry about for years. Cladding cannot be used behind a hob, but this can be easily overcome with an alternative covering such as glass or stainless steel splash backs. Cladding is available in a range of colours, designs, and effects, ensuring you can find cladding that matches the style of your kitchen.
